DOCS Set up the Kualia MCP server in two minutes

Connect your budget to Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor.

Kualia speaks the Model Context Protocol. Your AI assistant can read your transactions, envelopes, and reports directly, with your permission, so you can ask questions in plain English instead of opening dashboards.

7-day free trial OAuth, no API keys Scoped to your account

What your AI can do

Your budget, available to any model.

The Kualia MCP server exposes your transactions, envelopes, recurring bills, and reports as tools that any MCP-compatible AI can call. Same data you see in the app, available to the assistant you already use.

Ask in plain English

"What categories am I overspending in?" "How much have I spent on coffee this quarter?" The assistant pulls the answers from your real data.

Surface what you missed

"Which subscriptions have I not used this quarter?" "Find merchants I am spending more on this year." The AI scans across months and flags the patterns.

Reports on demand

Spending by category, monthly summaries, income reports, net worth. No dashboards to configure. Just ask and the assistant builds it.

Take action with consent

Reassign money between envelopes, set assigned amounts for the month, even import transactions. The AI proposes, you approve.

OAuth, no API keys

No copy-pasting tokens. Your client opens the Kualia app in your browser, you approve, and the connection is scoped to your account.

Scoped to your data

The AI can only see and do what your account can. Permissions are scoped per workspace, and you can disconnect from your client at any time.

AI Chat

A money assistant that knows your data.

Ask questions in plain English and get answers based on your actual transactions, envelopes, and bills. Pull custom reports and surface what your spending is quietly doing, without opening a single screen.

Ask anything about your money

"How much did I spend on coffee last quarter?" "What's eating my paycheck this month?" Answers come from your real data, not generic advice.

Catch what you forgot about

"Which subscriptions haven't I used this quarter?" "Find merchants I'm spending more on this year." The assistant scans your data and surfaces the answers.

Custom reports on the fly

"Compare grocery spending this year versus last." "Show me my recurring charges sorted by annual cost." No dashboards to configure.

Reviews

What people are saying.

Unedited reviews from people who switched from YNAB, gave up on spreadsheets, or finally stuck with a budget.

"Switched from YNAB and Kualia is an excellent replacement. The UI and UX are superior in my opinion: cleaner and more minimalist. There is also a board where users can vote on new features, which is great."

"After testing dozens of budget apps, I finally found one worth keeping. Sleek modern design, intuitive interface, and a developer who actually responds and ships what users ask for."

"For a fraction of the price of competitors, it offers pretty much the same functionality. The developer is super friendly and really prioritizes user feedback."

App Store Review

"The app is incredibly snappy. Budgeting a whole list of categories goes really fast, where other apps make this slow and cumbersome. Same with manually categorizing transactions."

"Super easy to set up. Basic spending and savings categories are created for me, so I don't have to manually make buckets for rent and utilities. The transaction history makes it easy to stay on top of expenses."

Who built this

Built by one person, used every day.

I got tired of budgeting apps that were either bloated with team features I would never use or so basic they could not handle real life. So I built the one I wanted, and I use it every day to run my own finances.

Solo built

One developer, no investors. Every decision is made for the person using the app.

Used by its maker

I budget with Kualia every day, so the rough edges get sanded down fast.

Direct support

Every email lands in my inbox. No ticket queues, no chatbots in between.

Public roadmap

Request features, vote on ideas, and follow what is shipping in the open.

No data resale

Your transactions are your business. Kualia never sells your data to anyone, ever.

Ships often

Small updates land most weeks. New features ship every month. Nothing sits in committee.

FAQ

Questions about the MCP server.

Setup, permissions, privacy, and a few things that come up often.

What is MCP?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and data sources in a consistent way. Kualia runs an MCP server at https://api.kualia.com/mcp, so any client that speaks MCP can read your budget data with your permission.

Which AI assistants does this work with?

Claude (web and desktop), Claude Code, Cursor, ChatGPT, and Perplexity all support MCP today. Any other MCP-compatible client works too. The server URL is the same for everyone.

Do I need a separate plan to use the MCP server?

No. MCP access is included with every Kualia subscription. You only pay for Kualia itself, plus whatever your AI client costs.

How does authentication work?

You never paste an API key. The connection uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE. The first time you connect, your AI client opens app.kualia.com in your browser, you approve the connection, and the client stores the token locally. To disconnect, remove the server from your client.

What data can the AI see?

The AI can read your transactions, envelopes, category targets, recurring transactions, and reports for the workspaces your account has access to. It cannot see anything outside of Kualia, and it cannot see other peoples data.

Can the AI change my budget?

Yes, but only when you let it. Tools that write data (like assigning money to a category) ask for your approval in the client before they run. Read-only tools (like reports) run directly.

How is this different from the AI Chat inside the Kualia app?

The in-app AI Chat is a built-in assistant that lives inside Kualia. The MCP server lets you use your favorite outside assistant (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor) with the same data. Use whichever fits your workflow. Most people use both.

Is my financial data shared with the AI provider?

Yes, by definition. Any AI assistant has to read your data to answer questions about it, so the relevant pieces are sent to whichever model you use. The in-app AI Chat sends data to a model too. With MCP, the data goes to whichever client you connect (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.), and the access token is stored by your client, not by the AI provider.
